Maxwell "Max" Hylton, of Roxbury, was shot dead inside Celebrity Cuts Barbershop around 7:17 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, as previously reported by Daily Voice. The 43-year-old was reportedly shot while working, according to CBS Boston

“The fact that this took place inside a barbershop, a hub for the community that is supposed to be a safe space for everyone to come and feel and look their best, makes this all the more devastating,” said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, according to WHDH

Friends told CBS Boston that Hylton was known for giving back to the community. He participated in a back-to-school program that gave free haircuts to children and also promoted local events.

"If I needed someone to talk to, he's just that person," one man told the outlet. "It's bad. Boston's bad we've got to fix this community guys, we got to do something, like something got to give."

"To your family and friends and kids. May Jah protect all of us," one Facebook user said. "My city is feeling like death is outside. Too many of us losing our ppl everyday 💔💔💔💔 this one hurt."

Hylton's death is additionally jarring as it comes after a string of fatal shootings in the city over the past week. The number of homicides in Boston now stands at 34, which is slightly less than 39 in 2021.

The investigation into Hylton's death is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Boston Police at (617) 343-4470. Anonymous tips can be made by calling the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1 (800) 494-TIPS or by texting the word ‘TIP’ to CRIME (27463).
